A Complete Solar Panel Battery Solution

!±8± A Complete Solar Panel Battery Solution

There are many reasons why a person would need a complete solar panel battery charging solution. One is for people who are on expeditions, or extended camping outings, where you are gone for weeks at a time. You will probably still need to do some kind of online work, keep connected to friends and family and certainly need to keep yourself entertained for that long. You may also need to communicate with the outside world in case of an emergency.

Another reason to have a complete solar panel battery solution is for those who like to travel and stay in their recreational vehicles. A good RV person knows that the best spots don't have any hook ups to electricity, and are in places that running a generator is just impractical, as well as noisy. In this case, operating solely off of batteries is the only way to go.

In the first case, there are many different solutions, but the best one are the types of chargers that are meant for such conditions. While they have many different kits to choose from, one of them stands out for powering all of your base camp needs, and much more.

Here is all that you get in the Extreme Base Camp Kit. You get two of their top o f the line 350 batteries. Each of these provides 350 watt hours of power storage. They are treated to be UV and weather resistant. They have status monitors, replaceable fuses, and a built in temperature control monitor to make sure the operate safely as well as for the long term.

This kit includes four Boulder 30M solar panels, each with 30watts of power, equaling a full 120 watts of solar power. These are highly efficient mono-crystalline panels, using the latest in solar technology. You also get the universal inverter, or UI which has a multiple plug-in for American and European plugs, and provides 400 watts continuous, and 800 watts of peak power for any electric device.

You also get 4 Light-a-Life Led light systems, each with a 3 Watt high intensity LED bulbs. These are rated for more that 20,000 hours of use, and are equivalent to a 45 watt incandescent light. They can be powered from any DC power source, it also has an off/on switch, and even a carabiner on a nine foot cord, so you can hang them any where. You get the wall charging unit, connector cables for the two power packs, cigarette adapter, and four of the carabiner cords, and you get all of this for just ,219.95.

You can buy extra power packs, more solar panels, and even smaller Sherpa systems if you need them. You can combine different single purchases with your combo kits for added power if you need to, piggy backing up to three power packs at one time. The Sherpa kits even have panels that fold up into their own carrying cases.

For the second type of battery solution, you need to think about what your needs are first. If you are thinking about complete RV solar solutions, then you need to get at least a sixty watt solar panel, just to start. You are going to have to get some high output deep cycle marine batteries, at least one for basic needs, if you plan to run things like a microwave oven, or media equipment, then two is recommended. For the best systems, you should at least 120 full watts of solar panels, with 2-4 hundred watt systems optimal. This means you will be able to not only charge up your batteries for night time use, but also all of your appliance needs on top of this.

How Does A Power Inverter Work? Power Inverters Explained

!±8± How Does A Power Inverter Work? Power Inverters Explained

A power inverter converts your car's direct current (DC) battery power into conventional alternating current (AC) power which can then run a range of household products such as microwaves, power tools, TVs, radios, computers etc when an AC outlet is not available. Particularly useful for camping or long road trips.

Just connect the inverter to your car battery, and plug your AC devices into the inverter and you've got power on the go. (Smaller inverters will connect directly via the car's cigarette lighter)

The Technical Bit...

Two factors determine how a power inverter works: wave output and wattage output. Wave output describes the physical appearance of electrical signals as they move across an oscilloscope. Square waves appear exactly as their name specifies: like squares on a grid. Pure sine waves, also called true sine waves, appear as visible waves on the screen.

How do I know which Inverter to choose?

The first step in selecting a power inverter is to match the inverter to the voltage of the battery you'll be using for power. In the majority of cases, you'll be using a standard 12-volt car battery, so you would want to select a 12-volt inverter.

The next step is to identify which devices you plan to power with the inverter. Each device should carry a label which that tells you the wattage it requires to operate. The wattage rating of your inverter must surpass the wattage of the highest wattage device or the total wattage of all the devices you plan to run simultaneously, or of the largest device.

Some devices draw a higher wattage than their normal operating wattage rating when they first start up. This is known as peak or surge, and this information should also be listed on the device's label. Most power inverters also have a peak rating, so make sure the inverter's peak rating is higher than the peak wattage of the device you intend to power. Microwaves are a special case. As an example, you may know that your microwave is a 400-watt microwave. This is actually the cooking wattage. The power wattage might be twice that amount. Again, check the label on the device to make sure.

Power inverters which run through your car cigarette lighter are designed for lower wattage devices - laptops, phone chargers etc. In fact, if you try to pass more than about 400 watts through a cigarette lighter connection, it will fail -- and it might even start a fire in your vehicle.

Having a Gas Powered Generator is Now a Necessity

!±8± Having a Gas Powered Generator is Now a Necessity

Power outages are all too frequent these days and they always seem to happen at night and when your in the middle of your favorite TV show. They can last for a few hours or several days depending on what caused it. When this happens, your gas powered generator instantly becomes your most cherished possession because as soon as it gets up and running the lights go back on, you don't have to worry about all your food spoiling and life begins to return to normal again. But what about those who don't have one? You can bet that most of those will be thinking about getting one soon if they have the means to do so.

The choices are many and can be confusing. A good choice for powering the necessities during an extended power outage would a model in the 10,000 watt range. These will power your refrigerator, heater, TVs, computers, washers, dryers and some if not all of you lights depending on the size of your home. If you are on a well this should power your pump too. Good models of this wattage can be had for about 00 or so.

A good gas powered generator will come with convenience features like electric start, a large gas tank (this is important because you don't want to get up in the middle of the night to re-fuel), an hour meter so you can do your maintenance on time and an auto shutoff feature for when the oil is too low. And if you choose a larger model, heavy duty wheels and handle are important too for moving it around.

If you have a large home and want everything running hassle free during an outage you might want to look into whole house generators. These behemoths look like a giant AC compressor and kick on automatically when the power goes out. There is a slight delay of a few seconds and then everything is powered up again. These generators typically have a car engine as the power source which is fueled by either natural gas or propane and pump out 10 to 150 kW of electrical power tied in to specific circuits. The higher end of these units can run ,000 or more not counting installation.

On the low end, you can always pick up a unit for about 0 to 0 that will power your TV, coffee pot and fan just fine. It all depends upon what you want and can afford.

One thing for sure though, power outages/blackouts are becoming more and more frequent and a gas power generator has become more of a necessity than a luxury item.

Upgrading Your Electrical Panel

!±8± Upgrading Your Electrical Panel

Sometimes, depending upon the age of your home, you may need to upgrade your electrical panel to receive the electrical company's electricity. The line flows through your outside meter into the electrical panel that controls the electrical current into the home. Panels have 100, 150, 200 or 400 amps capability so your home's electrical usage can not exceed these amounts. Your home may have sub-panels as well located somewhere else that is a smaller version of the key panel which they are wired through.

This is not a do-it-yourself job. You need to retain a certified electrical contractor to install an electrical panel or any major rewiring project. The amount of electricity fed through an electrical panel is deadly and should never be taken lightly. It's easier and perhaps guaranteeing a longer life to hire an expert electrician for this job. All the bravado and daring in the world can still stop you dead in your tracks by mishandling an electrical panel. Find a good electrician. End of story.

Typically your costs will run from 0-,200 to have a qualified electrician upgrade an existing panel to 100 amps, or ,500-,500 if an entirely new panel is required.

The costs to upgrade to 200 amps will run you ,300-,000 and ,000-,000 for 400 amps. Each sub-panel will run you 0-,000.

Electrical panels in an older home might have a lower capacity, but 100 amps is the current minimum required, while 150 amps are common. Many new homes are being built with 400 amps usually achieved by utilizing a 400-amp meter and two 200-amp panels.

A good electrician will help you understand exactly what is included in your quote and required in a specific situation. They will go over exactly every step to be taken, materials to be used and a timeline for installation. They will answer all of your questions, so prepare a list of questions and concerns before speaking with your electrician. This is the beginning of a good relationship with a qualified professional that you're going to want on your "go-to" list for electrical needs for your home. Make the most of developing this important relationship.

You need to check with your planning department for any restrictions or special requirements and a permit is needed most of the time. Permit costs vary per locality.

The upgrading project can include repairing old wiring, adding a copper grounding pole, removing and replacing the older panel.

When hiring an electrician, check on references and search for complaints with the Better Business Bureau. Be certain the electrical contractor is appropriately bonded and insured and is licensed in your state. Assure they are an employee of the business and not a sub-contractor. Employees tend to take pride and responsibility in their work and consider creating a life-long relationship with their customers. You really do need a "good electrician" in your life so taking care in the beginning selection process is important.

The project shouldn't take too long after the initial governmental agencies are satisfied. If you think you may need a new panel because of constant power outages, call an electrician today to have your panel and circuitry tested.

4 Steps to Build an Off-The-Grid Solar Powered Cabin

!±8± 4 Steps to Build an Off-The-Grid Solar Powered Cabin

Do you have a remote cabin that needs power? Don't pay outrageous amounts for a professional solar panel system when you can build your own for 10 times cheaper. Follow these basic steps and learn how to build you own homemade solar panels for under 0.

1. The first step is to calculate how much power your solar power system needs to generate. If this is a seasonal/weekend cabin, 400-500 watts should be enough. If you don't have enough upfront cash to get a system this big all at once, don't worry. Once you get the basic infrastructure built, you can just add panels to increase your wattage.

2. Now you will want to decide what major appliances you need. Newer appliances are much more efficient, so if possible use newer models. Don't be afraid to scale down, this is a cabin we're talking about here. A brand new mini-fridge is a much better option than a 30 year old full-size fridge.

3. Consider if a water system is necessary. If you decide you want a water system, I would recommend a gravity fed system so you don't need to waste power on a water pump. If you use your cottage often, you might consider a solar powered well pump that would feed to a tank in the attic. Solar powered water heaters are a great option to consider as well.

4. Finally, and most importantly: Don't spend thousands on a professional system! You can learn to build your own solar panels for under 0. Don't get suckered into spending 10 times that. You may be thinking: "But I don't know how to build a solar panel. That sounds complicated!" It's not as tricky as you might think...

There are tons of guides and e-books out there that will teach you how to build your own solar panels, but which ones are worth your money? You'll want to get a guide that has detailed step-by-step instructions. The more pictures and diagrams the better. Consider a guide that includes videos if you're more of a visual learner.
